Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista have taken the next step toward breaking ground on the Gaylord Pacific resort, which will include a convention center, public infrastructure, and two parks. The Gaylord Pacific resort is expected to open in 2020. The Gaylord Pacific resort will consist of a convention center, public infrastructure, and two parks, among other amenities. Development partner RIDA Chula Vista, LLC is responsible for the project’s development, which includes the port as well as the city.
Located between H and G Streets, west of Marina Parkway, the Gaylord Pacific Resort Hotel and Conference Center will be the world’s largest convention center when it is completed. Utilities are expected to be installed by the end of summer 2021, with construction on the resort hotel, public infrastructure, and conference center to begin immediately after and be completed by the end of the following year, in 2025.
Costs and Economic Consequences of the Proposed Project
Bringing forth the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan has taken more than a decade of collaborative effort between the Port of San Diego, the City of Chula Vista, and a wide set of stakeholder organizations (CVBMP). The CVBMP contains the resort hotel and conference center, which serve as the focal point and catalytic initiatives for the area’s economic development. Approximately $1.23 billion is expected to be spent on the resort hotel, conference center, parking complex, as well as the public infrastructure and parks that will be constructed in the surrounding area of the resort.
In addition to producing $1.6 billion in revenue during development and $475 million per year after it is fully operating, the Gaylord Pacific project is expected to have a considerable economic impact on the region. Approximately 1,500 permanent jobs on site and nearly 3,900 jobs per year in the surrounding region are expected to be created as a result of the project, which is expected to sustain 10,000 jobs (direct and indirect) during development.
A large convention hotel brand owned by Marriott International, Gaylord Hotels, will handle the Gaylord Pacific when it opens in 2019. The project’s specifications can be found on this website. It will be comprised of the following components:
The resort hotel has a capacity of up to 1,600 people.
Restaurants, bars, and lounges, as well as recreational facilities, a spa, a pool with a lazy river, bike and boat rentals, and other amenities, are all available as part of the retail and resort-level services available.
In terms of conference and meeting space, the convention center has around 275,000 net square feet, according to the manufacturer (including pre-function space).
Gaylord Pacific has established a number of public access points and amenities to promote connectivity and accessibility to the adjacent Chula Vista Bayfront neighborhood and surrounding area. Aside from that, the town will include amenities such as pedestrian promenades and bike lanes, food and snack kiosks, game activities (including a community pool), public art, and a community pool, among other things. The general public will have access to a variety of shopping and dining establishments, observation terraces and viewpoint points, water features, beach activities, and other amenities.
